Head Lice Symptoms

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE LICE AND WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?

If you suspect you are seeing head lice symptoms in either you or your child, the first thing you should do is realize that this is not a case of bad hygiene habits. Head lice are prevalent throughout all strata of society and can be contracted simply by coming into contact with another person who has lice or even by wearing the infected persons clothing or using their personal items (such as a hairbrush or hat).

So, now that we know you don’t have to blame yourself for contracting head lice, let’s take a quick look at an overview of what they are exactly, before moving on to identifying common head lice symptoms.

Head lice are tiny, blood sucking, insects which are usually found in the hair or scalp of humans. Between 6 and 12 million cases are reported worldwide each year with the majority usually being in children aged between 3 and 10 years old.

The lice will go through three discreet stages of development:
  • Nits – the egg stage.
  • Nymphs – the early stage insect once it’s emerged from the egg
  • Adult – Nymphs reach this stage in about 7 days and will live for around 30 days

Head lice symptoms are pretty easy to spot, if you know what you are looking for. You can locate Nits simply by examining the hair of the person suspected of being infected. The oval eggs are usually yellow or white in color and can be found attached to the shaft of hair – be aware though, they can often be mistaken for dandruff.

Once the eggs hatch into Nymphs, these young lice will immediately begin feeding off their host, drinking their blood much like a mosquito. The saliva of the Nymph will usually cause an allergic reaction in the host and the area around where the Nymph is feeding will begin to turn red from inflammation and begin to itch. As time passes and the infestation worsens, head lice symptoms become more pronounced: the itching will increase as the allergic reaction becomes increase. The host will begin to become irritable, and sores or welts may become visible on their scalp as the scratching becomes more intense. While you can learn more about head lice symptoms and treatments Click Here
